Yesterday I went to a Dr. and found out that I have an food allergy to corn, wheat, barley, soy, egg yolk, olive oil, and malt.
In other words I am pretty much moving to a gluten free lifestyle, along with just eating egg whites and no olive oil (that is what I am most bummed about).
Do you know the Gluten is in pretty much everything?
So tonight I have nothing to really blog about cuz I am trying to wrap my brain around what I am able to eat tomorrow.
I am reading this book:
My neighbor is letting me borrow this book:
And I am thoroughly researching this great blog:
So sorry I don't have anything excited today, I am just working on not being overwhelmed at the moment.
Hi Katie~ There are some really good blogs out there for gluten-free living and they have some great recipes and lots of help. My daughter and I are both gluten free, I have only been doing it for a couple of months now and am still trying to figure it all out myself. I found a great gluten-free bakery nearby- check around your area- this one has pizza and even pie crust. I'm going to start learning to bake my own items, but it is like learning to bake all over again! I've actually found that by avoiding gluten, I am eating much healthier overall! And it makes such a difference in how you feel. Oh, Egg Beaters don't have any egg yolk, and I actually really like eating them now. I know it's overwhelming, but you'll be surprised how much is out there now for gluten free eating!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the transition!
ReplyDeleteMy mom has a gluten allergy and has found so many great resources out there. Some awesome cookbooks, too. I have borrowed many. She just said the other night how she doesn't feel like she is missing out on anything, because there is so much help and the public has become more aware of allegies and supportive. We'll be thinking of you!
ReplyDeletetastykitchen.com has a special "gluten free" section and i think its pretty good. a good friend of mine has celiac's and her biggest challenge has been budgeting for food. (and satisfying her picky boyfriend with g-free foods!) she has also found that giving up lactose is best for her. but i think you just figure out what doesn't agree with you and adjust accordingly.
ReplyDeleteUse Grapeseed oil...it's not cheap but is good! We use it all the time! And my inlaws are gluten free, so I'll ask my MIL about any good tips or books she has...I am doing that blood test soon as well...I am scared at what I'll find! Also...gary's dad (the dr.) said that sometimes if you just stay away from the foods for 3months you can slowly re-introduce them...so it may not be all bad!
ReplyDeleteHi, Katie,
ReplyDeleteI'm Kat's college roommate's mom. (Charlotte)I enjoy reading your blog. You are so handy and crafty and a great mom! I have been following a blog for a while that is about crockpot recipes that are gluten free. They go back for several years when she was doing a daily recipe for a cookbook. Hope you can use some of them.

Oh Katie, that stinks...but sounds like people have lots of ideas about how to be gluten free these days. Good Luck and loved the laundry post. I throw Isabella's stuff downstairs too now since we moved her up. =)
ReplyDeleteHi Katie,
ReplyDeleteThere are some great blogs out there: glutenfree4goofs.wordpress.com, glutenfreehomemaker.com, glutenfreemommy.com to name a few. I also really love Pamela's products (especially the chocolate chip cookies). You can get these at Kroger/Publix and Amazon.com.
Wow, that is awful news. My friend has a condition and cant eat a lot of things. She went raw recently. She was on the gluten free but the soy was a big huge problem for her. SO far she is liking the raw diet. There is loads of info out there. Bless you, I know this can be a shock.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that! I hope you find some good recipes soon.
ReplyDeleteWow. I can only imagine how stressful that must be. Hopefully you will be able to transition without too much trouble!
ReplyDeleteKatie,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I had some allergy testing done a few weeks ago and will go next week to find out the results. Not sure I'm looking forward to that! We have friends that have allergies to gluten and wheat, and I know it is a challenge for them, but they feel better making those changes. I recently went back to using soy milk and now find the taste of regular milk "strange". King Arthur Flour company has gluten free products, but I know it can be an expense change to make. Will be thinking of you as you make new adjustments!
Aww I'm truly sorry to hear that, Katie. I will be praying that the Lord helps you transition into your new lifestyle easily. I know it will be a BIG change. Thank God there is a lot more awareness about this type of thing though, I suppose. Hopefully you will be able to find a lot of great recipe books, and people will reach out to give you loving advice with it all. Praying for you, friend. Hope you have a lovely weekend : ).
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your allergies. Good luck with the changing the diet thing :o)
ReplyDeleteLOL about your son helping get the laundry downstairs. That is tooo funny and just like a boy.
Thanks for visiting me over at Pittypat Paperie. Come again anytime.
Ugh darn allergies. I know how tough it can be. My son has allergies to wheat, dairy, beef and peanuts. When he was first diagnosed I was worried sick I would not be able to find anything the little guy could eat. It is a total lifestyle change. Once you get the hang of the label though it does become a little better. Let me know if I can help in any way. I'll be thinking about you and hopefully you start to feel a lot better! ~ Stephanie Lynn
